This episode I thought was a brilliant way to start 'new who', it introduced Rose perfectly showing how her normal, boring life was changed and that is what the whole series is about really; Roses' transition from a normal working life to someone travelling the stars. The episode was also the first time we met the 9th doctor, we don't know what made the 8th doctor regenerate (although we may find out in the 50th anniversary) but I thought Eccleston's portrayal of the doctor who had just lost his home world was amazing, if only he had stayed for longer... The story as a whole is very good, I remember when I first watched it I was only about 5 and the Autons scared me so much I never went near a shop window dummy again (and I still don't like to.) I also liked the way that for a first episode they didn't go for a story that was really complicated but they went for a simple 'invasion of Earth' story. The visual effects were also very good, when the shop explodes it looks very realistic, the directing is also very good. Another part I liked about the story was when the doctor was telling rose about who he is, it sent shivers down my spine. Overall a great way to start a new era of doctor who.

This episode is brilliant! If it had been made in the Tom Baker era then it would be counted as a doctor who all time classic. Paul McGann is just amazing in this episode and I wish that he could have carried on as the doctor he was BRILLIANT, if he had done more episodes he probably would have been counted as the greatest doctor. I have comfort in the fact that he got to be the doctor in audios and things because he was just such a great doctor. Anyway, the cover is good I think, even the old version of the DVD release wasn't too bad. This shows the 8th doctor, Grace and the master who possessed Grace's boyfriend and it also shows the TARDIS interior which is my favourite TARDIS design and I wish they had kept using it. The episode is brilliant with the right amount of pace and suspense. The part where the doctor regenerates in the morgue was particularly scary and so was the master as the kind of snake creature. The doctor showing Grace who he is was one of the more emotional scenes, it was very good creating that trust In the doctor straight away. Overall I am very happy the 8th doctor got to get such a great plot and episode. Great story. I really enjoyed "survival" yet I also found it quite sad to watch knowing that this is the last ever classic episode (unless you count the movie) and also marks the last appearance of Ace. The amount of special features on these two disks about it being the last episode is overwhelming. The cover isn't all that good; it shows Ace, who is turning into a cheetah person, the doctor holding a skull (in the episode I didn't understand why he did this and still don't but most 7th doctor episodes are like this)and lastly a cheetah person on a horse. The episode is very eerie at the beginning telling about mysterious disappearances going on around Perivale then Ace's meeting with a cheetah person and being taken to another world, and all this leading up to the big reveal that the master is behind all this. The effects like the eyes are very creepy. I loved Sophie Aldred's acting as Ace in this episode like finding out her friends had disappeared was spectacular. The directing in the episode is good but I wouldn't call it the best I have ever seen. Overall a good episode to end classic who. Vengeance on Varos for me was a very dark story and things like the set's and the doctor's actions reflect this. But first we will start with the cover. Like all special edition covers I really like it, I think it could have been a little darker but nonetheless much better than the last cover for 'Vengeance on Varos'. It shows the 6th doctor in one of his most famous poses, Sil and Peri who has been transformed in one of Sil's experiments. The story was good but not my favourite episode. The set's are very dark and right at the beginning we see this as the blue TARDIS appears in the dark and murky background. The doctor's actions are very dark, there was a scene where the doctor let a man fall into acid which caused much controversy. Sil is a very dark character and his costume (which is amazing) shows this I think. The acting in the episode is very good as usual. Overall a great episode that is not without it's faults. Firstly, I LOVE the cover, it is brilliant and very fitting for Peter Davison's final episode. The episode is also very good and is regarded as one of the greatest doctor who episode. When I first discovered this and got the episode I was expecting a really complicated episode but it wasn't it was just about the doctor going into Caves, getting captured and getting poisoned by a plant and I love it because of this, I HATE complicated episodes but this episode was simple yet had everything a doctor who episode needs and I think this is why it is so successful. This was Peri's second episode as a companion and already her and the doctor's relationship is very good especially when the doctor gives her the last bit of medicine to cure her, sacrificing himself even though he has kind of only just met her. The effects are great as usual and Sharaz Jek's mask and costume is great, I also really like how when we first met Sharaz Jek he is cold and bitter but then we discover he is quite friendly and has an emotional side. One thing I didn't like about the episode was the set's inside the caves, I think they could have done better with that but never mind. Overall a great episode. Well this story is known as the greatest story in all of doctor who as voted by doctor who magazine readers (there is even a little sticker on the DVD saying this). For me personally this isn't my favourite story, I have lot's of favourites but this is not one. It's not that it is a bad story, I just that I have seen better episodes, I think that this episode is so popular because it shows how the Daleks (the most iconic monster in all of doctor who) originated. This story is a very important in the world of doctor who and it is also very interesting to find out where the Daleks came from. A big 'first' in the episode is it is the first time we meet Davros, a crazy scientist. And I thought Michael Wisher's portrayal as Davros was spectacular and quite disturbing. The acting was great in the episode (especially Lis Sladen when she falls from the scaffolding). The effects were great and the set's were perfect and had just the right amount of eerie. Lastly the DVD cover is brilliant it shows Davros and 3 Daleks on Skaro. Well what a great episode this is, a perfect story to end Jon Pertwee's first season as 'doctor who'. This story is sometimes regarded as the best classic doctor who story or at least the best Pertwee story. I wouldn't call it my best story of all classic who but I would call it the best Pertwee story. The first time I watched it I found it a bit confusing but that's to be expected with this story, a seven parter where 'operation Inferno' is ago but the doctor is worried especially when his TARDIS takes him to a parallel universe where 'operation Inferno' has destroyed the world. I think what was fun about it is we meet the people we know turn into people with completely opposite personalities from what they normally are. A very good twist in the story. The cover is very good I think, it shows the parallel Earth being engulfed in flames, the scientist who is turning into a mutant, the doctor and the Brigadier from the parallel Earth. The effects are absolutely fantastic here, the fire and everything looks great. The acting is superb. It must have been fun for the actors to act somebody else. Finally as most of you should know this episode was the last time we would see Liz Shaw, who in my opinion is a great companion, very witty and smart, also In the special features it said she left because she was so smart and the producers thought this was bad because the viewers wouldn't know what was going on and the fact Liz didn't get a proper send off in the episode was a bit annoying but that is my only fault. |
