The atmosphere and tension in this episode was perfect and just right, the first few shots of that dark gloomy street set's the scene for the whole episode I think and the directing in these first few shots were also very good. The music first sounded really good but then it just kept getting repeated and it began to get tedious after a while, they didn't have to keep repeating that musical score. Another thing I didn't particularly like was Davros, he looked amazing when we first saw him emerging from the smoke then, he talked and his voice, it just sounded horrible this was probably intentional but they went a little too far mainly because every time he spoke he shouted and I just found this annoying, I was just like 'Shut up!' after a while. The last big thing I didn't like was the way Janet Fielding (Tegan) left. I mean her exit was just pants if I am honest, they had opportunities to make it more about her but they didn't take them. The Human head gear shaped like a dalek I thought looked pretty good actually although I have heard that they really hurt. The cover is great and looks very professional and matches the mood of the episode. The actors were all amazing even though most of them die anyway. Overall a good episode but if I am honest not my favourite. I think it could have been better if Davros wasn't in it at all, all he did was a bit of annoying shouting and taking people over but basically it was pointless having him here, it would have been better if they just focused on the daleks. Also what would have made it better was if it was at least a 3 parter so Tegan could get a decent send off.

Jon Pertwee's swansong, and what a great swansong it is. My only criticism with this episode was that the brigadier wasn't in it very much, for Pertwee's last episode I would have thought the UNIT family would play a bigger part. The spiders I thought were quite well made and looked quite good. The plot I thought was very interesting because it starts with meditation and ends with a giant spider, and I liked the way they manage to get it like this. One of the most pointless things about this episode, it just went on forever, nearly all of episode two was the chase and basically it was all pointless because after they had gone on road, on water, and in the air they nearly captured him then the villain disappeared and reappeared back in the manor, so basically it was all pointless, but although it may have been pointless I still found it enjoyable and I am sure Jon Pertwee did too. In this episode we see LOT'S of characters that had worked with Pertwee in previous episodes and in one of the special features it said that this was to make Pertwee more comfortable and enjoyable in his last episode. The cover is very good, it shows the 3rd doctor, Sarah Jane with a spider on her back in one of her most famous poses and the great one in the background. Overall a great episode to end a great doctor. This is the second classic DVD I ever bought and I loved it, especially Ace who is my favourite companion ever! The part I loved most of all was when Ace turned the racist sign in the window over, this just summed up Ace for me. The daleks were as good as ever here, I really liked the special weapons dalek and wish they could have used this or a variation of this in the new series. Sylvester McCoy was as good as ever also here, coming from a slightly let's say not great first series to a kind of darker doctor in the coming series' and I think this episode kind of shows this when he destroys Skaro . The cover is brilliant but I wouldn't call it my favourite if I am honest but much better than the original release. The explosions were another big part in this story, they were enormous and lot's of them, the first episode of a new series certainly went of with a bang. The directing was good as usual. Overall a great episode with great acting. (As requested by Dalekwho) The episode overall was great, not the best story ever but still good, I honestly can't think of any criticism about this episode, everything was good but it doesn't really stand out to me, I am not sure why but it isn't the kind of episode I would re-watch. I thought the Sea devils looked amazing and were incredibly well made, very good for the budget doctor who had at the time. I didn't really like how they were choreographed, I think that could have been better. The episode also has a very iconic doctor who scene and that is when the Sea devils rise from the water, it is especially creepy and I can imagine that scaring kids when it was first shown. The cover is superb and beautifully made, one of my favourite classic covers. It shows the third doctor, the master a Sea devil and Sea devils coming out of the water. The directing and effects were good but as I say the Sea devils could have been better choreographed. Overall a great episode but certainly not my favourite. My new favourite classic episode. This episode was incredibly fun and witty and interesting. Filmed in Paris 'City of death' marked the first ever episode of doctor who to be filmed abroad, and even though they weren't there long they certainly got everything in, like the Eiffel tower and the Arc de triomphe and this is one of the reasons why it was successful. Another big thing in this episode is that part 4 of this serial received the most viewers out of any other doctor who episode, which is a massive achievement. The cover I think isn't very good for such a great episode, but at least it includes the Paris skyline. The plot is a perfect plot written by David Agnew who isn't a real person, just a pseudonym, the real writer was David Fisher. The jokes were great, the fourth doctor was in his element in this episode. The makeup on the Jagaroth were great. Overall a great episode and not a boring part in sight. The first part of this story was amazing and the story is easy to follow with great acting from everyone. The next three parts weren't as good I thought because I thought they dragged on a little. Firstly though, the cover. The cover is really good it has the right amount of things on it and is very fitting for the first ever serial of doctor who. It shows Susan, the junkyard and the TARDIS in the stone age. The first part of the story as I said above was amazing, it introduced all the characters well and made sense (kind of.) One thing I didn't like about this episode was when it shows the flashbacks of Susan doing weird things at school, they didn't really look very good. Another thing was I didn't think Carole Ann Ford's acting was all that good, she could have played it a little better. The next three parts were slightly boring and the set's weren't that great. They didn't need 3 episodes basically showing the cavemen discovering fire. Still these episodes made sense and the plot was good but just needed more adventure and excitement. Overall, not my favourite episode ever but still a good way to kick off doctor who. I watched this last night for the third time, the first was when it was on TV, the second was when I bought the DVD which must have been a year ago and both of these times I honestly didn't appreciate the beauty of this episode so when I sat to watch it last night with understanding the beauty in mind, the beauty came out of the episode in bucket loads, my point is you have really got to watch and think when watching this episode to understand it's beauty and I think that is what makes it a great episode, possibly the best of Matt Smith era, because of the great moments like when Amy traps the doctor's tie in a car door and the doctor has to make her trust him after the broken TARDIS makes him 12 years late, this was a very special moment and I think this should happen every time the doctor regenerates I remember this also happened in 'doctor who the movie.' Another thing I think made the episode great was Matt Smith (the eleventh doctors) acting, it was just perfect. We discovered what he was going to be like with the Atraxi and we discovered his costume which suited him perfectly. Karen Gillan (Amy) and Arthur Darvill (Rory) were also brilliant but I didn't like the fact Amy was a Kissogram but I guess that was necessary for the episode. The effects on prisoner Zero and the Atraxi were Ace also the music was perfect as usual. Overall I love this episode and is one of my favourites of Matt Smith era. This is my favourite episode in all of doctor who for 2 reasons 1) It is a great plot with great characters. 2) It is just so funny! The episode Is overshadowed by the previous 'Doctor's daughter' episode and the following 'silence in the library' episode and I hate that, when such a great episode with such a great plot is overshadowed. I really enjoyed the Agatha Christie murder mystery episode I thought that really fitted with the story. Donna was my favourite character in this episode she had some really funny moments. But I also liked Fenella Woolgar as Agatha Christie who had just found her husband sleeping with another woman. Another part I liked was the Vespiform and CGI on that, I found it quite sad when the Vespiform dies. They did a very good job of making the background look very 1920's and the music was perfect. Overall I love this episode and i just can't really express in words how much I love it. I really enjoyed this episode, I didn't really like series 3 as a whole but this episode really stood out to me. We were introduced to a new companion: Martha Jones and this is how the episode started; showing Martha's life as a doctor going into work on what she thought was a normal day. Right at the beginning we see weird things going on like the doctor showing up then seeing the man in black leather suit and a motorcycle helmet (a slab, a slave of the Plasmavore). Then things really get weird, the whole hospital is transported to the moon by the Judoon. The visual effects on the moon is very good then the effects on the Judoon's spaceship is also very good the part where a Judoon Platoon walk across the moon is a brilliant sequence, it is very scary and hair raising. The acting is very good by Freema Agyeman (Martha Jones). I really liked the fact it was a kind of murder mystery by the plasmavore and we are all guessing who it could be and then we discover it was the little old lady (isn't it always). Lastly we find out that Martha's family is falling apart and she is the only one who is trying to sort everything out and the doctor saves her from that and takes her for a trip of a lifetime! Everything about the episode was great and that is why it is my favourite of series 3. This episode was the third episode of the David Tennant era of doctor who, the first (Christmas special) was about the doctor's post regeneration the second (New Earth) I thought focused on Rose more than the new doctor then this one finally focused on the new doctor, personally I think it would have been better if the swapped this episode around so that it came after the Christmas special but oh well. We had seen a little of what the new doctor was going to be like in the Christmas special (no second chances) but this episode we really began to see what he was like; we saw his love for aliens when he saw the Warewolf, we saw his love for humans when they met queen Victoria and finally we saw his love for technology when he saw the telescope (which we later find out the doctor put in his TARDIS in Journey to the centre of the TRDIS.) The parts where the Warewolf is chasing them is very exiting and scary, the CGI of the Warewolf were spectacularly done. The parts where they meet queen Victoria in the field were very weld done with the period costumes. Another thing I liked about the episode was Pauline Collins portrayal as Queen Victoria, I thought she played her perfectly, very well done to her! |
